Read the consonant first

In कि, the short इ sign appears before क visually, but the syllable begins with the consonant sound. Compare कि and की in किताब and कील.

Why these rows?

ङ, ञ and ण are left out of this starter chart; introduce them in words with a teacher. ऋ-sign forms such as कृ, conjuncts and other combinations need separate practice. This is not an exhaustive syllable chart.

A short practice sequence

  1. Find क. Read only क, का, कि, की.
  2. Notice which mark changed while the consonant stayed the same.
  3. Repeat with म. Compare मा and मी.
  4. Return to letter writing if the shapes are still unfamiliar.

For parent-led practice. Formal Hindi educator review is still pending. Schools may group signs and conjuncts differently; follow your teacher's sequence.
