How many swar and vyanjan are there?

This chart has 11 independent swar plus the two signs अं and अः, and 33 vyanjan. क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र are conjuncts - two letters joined together - not separate basic letters. Because charts count these groups differently, you may see totals such as 44, 46 or 52 letters elsewhere. Follow your school's sequence.

How to use the chart

1. Print the PDF on A4 portrait (colour or grayscale both work).
2. Point to two or three letters a day and say their example words together.
3. Cover a word and let your child find its first letter.
4. Move to a swar or vyanjan worksheet when the shapes look familiar.

What the colours mean

On the PDF, each consonant row keeps the traditional वर्ग (group) together in one colour, ending with य र ल व श ष स ह. The colours are only a memory aid; the order is the familiar school sequence.
